Happy New Year to you and 2023 is going to be a very exciting year for St James Church.
In March 2023 we will be commencing the final stage of the restoration works, which will include the installation of a modern and efficient heating system, toilet facilities and flexible seating inside the church. These improvements will enable the building to be used for new formats of services and new community events, such as concerts. We have now instructed JG Restoration Ltd, the builders who so successfully built our new roof, to undertake the works. The works will take 6 months and will be completed in early September 2023. We will provide regular updates as the work progresses.
In total we have now raised 95% of the funding required to commence this phase of the Restoration Project. We have several outstanding grants to hear from which we hope will complete the Project fundraising needs. We are most grateful to our generous donors and Charitable Trusts including the Bernard Sunley Foundation, The Gladiator Trust, National Lottery, The Church of England, The Greenham Trust, The Benefact Trust, The Gerald Palmer Eling Trust, Garfield Weston, Englefield and Payne Gallway Charitable Trusts and The Laing Family Trust.
Unfortunately, from March 2023 the church will be closed to the public. Alternative services will be made available in the local village hall and outside in the churchyard (in the warmer weather) and of course other churches in the Benefice welcome everyone to their services. All services details are regularly updated on this website.
The churchyard will still be open to everyone. Access to the churchyard will however be only via the public footpath to the left of the church.
